When patients hear the phrase, oral surgery, they don’t usually think of a quick, pain-free procedure with little to no recovery time. Visions of blood-soaked bandages, lukewarm liquid diets, and days or weeks of rest and healing may run through their heads. With state-of-the-art laser technology, oral surgery in Orlando starts to more closely resemble the former than the latter. At Sand Lake Family Dental, we offer a wide variety of oral surgery procedures utilizing Laser Dentistry.

ADVANCED LASER THERAPY

Lasers have become common fodder for sci-fi movie weapons, but the technology is not as fanciful as it seems. Laser is actually an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Simply stated, lasers are intense light beams put through a number of electromagnetic accelerations. Lasers have numerous uses including sighting for long-distance rifles, harmless fun for cats, and mapping out a straight line to hang a picture. In recent years, medical and dental practitioners have started using laser therapy for a number of procedures. Lasers make it possible to reduce the amount of pain and bleeding, laser precision means the more natural structure is preserved, and healing times are much shorter.

SURGICAL PROCEDURES WITH LASER TECHNOLOGY

At Sand Lake Family Dental, we offer a number of procedures utilizing laser technology including:

  • Gum recontouring – to straighten out or change the shape of a gum line that covers too much of teeth or covers teeth unevenly giving smiles the appearance of being gummy.
  • Frenectomy – there is a small amount of soft tissue connecting the tongue to the bottom of the mouth, but in some patients, the tissue is too large making chewing, speaking, and swallowing more difficult.
  • Benign tumor removal and biopsy – patients with benign tumors that impair speaking or chewing can have them removed painlessly, and to determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant, we use lasers to perform precise, painless biopsies.
  • Accelerated teeth whitening – lasers catalyze (speed up) the chemical process that removes stains from teeth during whitening. By applying a laser to teeth while whitening, the process is completed more quickly and effectively.
